This fine story packs a lot of disturbing reflection into a brief space. Its narrator is a nice example of ambiguity, her tone both naive and expressive as she brings us up to date with her alarming life so far - a life so confined by multiple forms of poverty (of money, of experience, of imagination, of love) that the only form of influence she can conceive of is sexual: and that, we discover, cannot exactly be depended on, even when she reckons that the higher-prestige object of her affections might be amenable on account of his lacking one leg. Inge Moore wickedly uses the narration alternately to reveal and conceal - each paragraph tells us something about Tammy Lee's development, and, by implication, a lot about unengaged social services and the class attitudes of those around her, but it takes almost all of the story for us to realise exactly what ominous effects have made Tammy Lee the danger to others and herself she now is. Artful and earthy, packed with waspish details (like the daughter having the now-traditional double first name, just like her mother), laced with black humour and deftly structured, 'Happy for a While' is poignant, funny and horrifying all at once.Product details

Great voice and a nice little twist at the end that literally gave me chills. I wasn't sure if I should love the main character or loathe her, but her voice sucked me in right to the end. I highly recommend this story!
Short story about a girl who wants everything but thinks life gives her a dirty deal. She has a distorted view about how to achieve happiness. She fools herself into thinking that a one-time date is the love of her life and the result of her anger is disastrous. You never learn her name, but every other thought that she has. This is a skillful exercise in creative writing, but doesn't give the reader time to connect at all with the heroine.
A quick story but with a distinct voice, very sad but still poignant. You definitely got a feel for the main character in this few pages.
I really enjoyed this and felt like the author was sitting across the table from me, relating the story in her own words, in her own voice. The ending surprised me, but I guess it shouldn't have.
I hope to read more of this author's work.
Inge Moore packs a lot of punch in this short story that previously appeared in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. Ms. Moore manages to get into the head of a young woman saddled by poverty and a lack of education, one who dreams big but doesn't have a handle on how to make those dreams materialize. So what's this troubled gal supposed to do? Go on a manhunt or two, that's what.
A nice, short, quick read that presents a cold dose of reality told in an authentic voice (sad and poignant).
Not the ending I hoped for at the beginning... but the ending makes sense based on events in the story.

I liked this story. You get all the ingredients I need in a short story plot, characterization and resolution. You also get a surprise ending!!
I would like to know just a tad more about Tammy Lee and Tom as people. Tom takes her out on first date to a motel. Was he so full of himself that he thought any woman would sleep with him or did Tammy Lee have a reputation? I found it a bit odd.
I would recommend this for anyone wanting a nice short.
